So You Thought You Were OK ?
Things changed for users of radio microphones in 2013. The Governments so called Digital Switchover in 2012 meant that some frequencies were no longer available for use by radio microphones. Up until now the new users of those frequencies have been getting ready to utilize them and no real interference has been experienced by those who shouldn't have, but have still been using radio microphones on those banned frequencies. Now all that is changing and those frequencies are beginning to be used by mobile internet providers and mobile phone companies etc. and will soon be totally unusable by those who thought that the switchover hadn't really made all that much difference.
The good news is however that wireless microphone manufactures have realized the problems and have brought out new systems to help manage the problems experienced by the users of their products. The new 2.4 GHz systems from Audio-technica and Line 6 are well away from the frequencies used by the mobile companies and in addition are licence free as well as having major technological advances in their design which makes them better than ever before. So here's an up to date look at what is now available

Channel 70 (Licence free -Shared Band)
Its important to remember that the existing space in the old deregulated UHF channel 70 band between 863 and 865 MHz is still useable and no licence is required to use up to a possible 4 frequencies in this band side by side. It should be remembered though, that this is a shared band which still runs the risk of interference. However it may still be ideal for many small  installations in churches etc.
In addition the old VHF frequencies between 173.8 and 175.00 MHz is also still useable licence free. How long these no licence bands will continue to be available is undetermined at this time. There are some very good channel 70 systems available from Both Audio-technica and Proel  on this website.

Channel 38 (Licence Required - Shared Band)
Channel 38 is also available for use in churches under a shared licence with less likelihood of interference because for the most part, only professional/responsible users are likely to be using this band. A shared licence for channel 38 systems costs around 75.00 per year or 135.00 for two years when booked online from JFMG.co.uk (it costs more by telephone). Once you have paid your licence fee you can use up to 10 systems on 10 different frequencies in the same venue without having to pay anymore.
To check the availability of channel 38 in your area go to JFMG.co.uk and select Channel 38 lookup tool. (have your postcode ready).

Coordinated Band (Licence Required)
A coordinated licence is the best choice for mission critical applications as it is the only option for full protection from interference.
With coordinated systems the yearly licence fee is only 28.00 per system for the first 6 systems in a single band, the rest of the band is free to use accommodating an additional 4 systems.
If you need to, you can use several bands and far in excess of 10 systems at once as follows:-
1 band = 10 systems,
2 bands side by side = 16 systems,
4 bands side by side = 20 systems

A coordinated licence is site specific and is coordinated with digital television.
You can check availability in your location by creating an account in your location on JFMG.co.uk Select the UHF mic/IEM (in ear monitoring) planner and enter your location details.

Licence No of systems Cost Risk of interference Range
Deregulated Shared Up to 4 Free High TV Channel 70
Shared Pro User Up to 10 Single fee of 75 per year for up to 10 systems Medium TV Channel 38

There are now 4 available options of frequency bands for use with wireless microphones:-

* Deregulated band - TV Channel 70

The new 2.4Ghz ISM band

Benefits of using coordinated licences include:-
Peace of mind: Whilst you hold your licence no-one else can use your licenced frequencies, leaving you clear of interference.
High power systems can be used on high power when on a coordinated licence.
By using coordinated licences you can avoid the headaches of the 2012 switchover completely and future-proof your wireless microphone systems.
Spectrum availability can be found simply and quickly by visiting JFMG.co.uk and entering the postcode of your church or location.
